fire doors: a Passive Fire Protection

As every business and home owner will no doubt be aware they have certain responsibilities when it comes to fire safety, and fire doors need to be considered.

What they might not be aware of, however, is that effective fire safety is split into three separate components and that when applied together it is these three components which will prevent the spread of fire, the damage it can cause and the loss or harm to life.

Fire Doors are a crucial consideration

For example whilst fire doors and an extinguisher might certainly represent a good start and a step in the right direction they are by no means a full and effective fire prevention system.
The three components are Active, Passive and Prevention.

This is crucial when talking about fire doors.

Active Fire Protection involves the detection and suppression of a fire as and when it occurs and covers items such as fire alarms, extinguishers and blankets.

These are the items which must be tested on a regular basis in the hope that they will never be needed.
Passive Fire Protection is the element of building safety which incorporates fire doors. As the name suggests, a passive method of protection means that they remain dormant until required. They are mainly concerned with compartmentalising and containing a fire such as, as already mentioned, fire doors, seals and fire proof walls.

The third component is Fire Prevention which is the planning and procedures which are put in place in case of fire such as fire drills, escape and evacuation plans and a chain of command in case of fire.

Only when all of these elements such as extinguishers, fire doors, drills and evacuation plans are put in place can a building be classed as fire safe.
